Hello, Nicolas pinto here. This is my review/obliteration of the “sequel” to one of the best anime of all time. Naruto and Shippuden mean a lot to me (pieces of fiction that helped me through some very hard times) and it is a tragedy what has happened to the story. That is, if you even consider Boruto canon. It’s not even by the same author nor should it have happened in the first place.
Naruto should have ended with Madara being the final villain (although I am fine with Indra and ashura lore being included). It was going to be perfect, I cannot express into words how devastated I was when seeing the lame excuse of a retcon that kaguya was. Even then, I loved the final Naruto vs Sasuke fight and Shippuden’s ending was very good all things considered. Boruto on the other hand… well… I’m not going to sugar coat this. It’s one of the most poorly written works of fiction I have ever seen (both the anime and the manga are abysmal). I dislike the anime less because at least it has good animation at times (although it also has horrible animation at times). But the manga’s art is so bad that it could traumatize an Uchiha into awakening the Mangekyo.
All the new characters (and some of the old ones) look horrible in the Boruto manga. At this point it should be called Boruto’s bizarre adventure (with how ridiculous and goofy the designs are). None of these characters should be in a world like Naruto. This brings me to the second point, Boruto didn’t just assassinate the loved Naruto characters, it brutally murdered them and stomped on their corpses. Naruto and Sasuke are way weaker than their teen versions for no reason at all. Nerfing the two main characters to let the bratty new generation shine is a sadistic move and just poor writing. Naruto characters are so easily beaten left and right, that it’s humiliating. There are some rare occasions when a Naruto character is done justice, but those are few.
I really wanted to like this sequel, but everything just keeps getting worse and worse as time goes on. The power scaling is also a mess (throughout the whole thing but especially in two blue vortex. I assume it will get worse as more is added in the future just like everything else). Boruto is one of the strongest for no logical reason, a girl with a Mangekyo is supposed to be Otsutsuki level, and so on. If we use actual logic, all of the newer characters except a select few should be destroyed by Madara. Boruto has a completely different feel/atmosphere than its predecessors. It doesn’t hit the same way anymore and feels too modern and too different. Long gone are the days when villains were amazing characters and past generations were brought back to life. I do not and will never consider anything after Shippuden to be canon to Naruto. If you like Boruto, that is fine. No fiction is morally wrong, and I think it is all morally good (as I have always stated). However, I think it needs to be made non-canon. Having everything be an infinite dream (or any other way to make this non-canon) would make more money than Boruto ever will, and it would be one of the best twists in all of fiction. Madara would get a proper final battle, Kaguya and the aliens would never show up, and Naruto and Sasuke could get a remade final valley fight.
Naruto Shippuden was possibly my favourite anime of all time along with Tokyo Ghoul and Dragon Ball (very different fictional works) and I will always love it, but Boruto did its best to ruin it. Let’s just pretend it doesn’t exist. It’s a different fictional story written by a different person, and that’s how it should be.
